The Bare Truth Podcast
'The Bare Truth' is a celebration of the extraordinary in day-to-day living, from the unsung hero to those on a bigger stage. Each week, Julia interviews someone from a different area of interest who is passionate about what they do, who is expressing themselves in their own unique way, and who wants to share what they do with others.
Please feel free to contact Julia with any comments about the show, or if you would like to be interviewed yourself. We also include contact details of our guests where possible - if you'd like more information, why not get in touch?
Interview with Mike Ovens, Director of the Running Inn
07 May 10
Mike Ovens served in the Royal Navy for 25 years where he rose through the ranks to commissioned officer. His final post was as a Fleet Controller at the Permanent Joint Headquarters, Northwood, prior to that he’d worked as senior warfare officer and was active in both the Falklands and Gulf War. As a former Royal Navy/Combined Services 800m/400m competitor he’s used his experience to coach athletes from novice to advanced levels. Mike is a Level 3 Advanced Instructor/Personal Trainer (Register of Exercise Professionals) and Running Coach. He regularly participates in middle distance and Cross Country events, and is a member of Hailsham Harriers Running Club, in East Sussex, as well as joint co-ordinator of the Running Inn Running Club in Eastbourne.
As I came into the last stetch of the Nice marathon last November, a familiar voice was calling from the crowd: ’1000 metres to go Julia – 2 and half laps of the track.’ As a former track athlete, no.1 in the Navy for 8 years, Mike was speaking in a language he knew I would recognise, having also begun my career as a track runner. All those reps on a track does make you think in distances as laps of the track – and the sound of the bell has a very welcome ring to it. Mike’s voice that day was the bell at the end of 26 miles, encouraging me to get that last bit out before the finishing tape – and this is the case in many people’s lives. He spends his days inspiring others to reach higher than they thought possible, helping them to stretch beyond what they previously thought they could do and in the process creating a community spirit with his individual personal training, early morning circuit sessions by the sea and the Wednesday night running group.
Would you like to be interviewed?
Would you like to be interviewed by me, about any subject or any aspect of your life? Is there something you want people to know about: maybe your work, your hobby, an event, work you are doing, a charity, your art, your writing, your music, your business, your politics, your spiritual beliefs – anything at all? What motivates and excites you, what you’d like to achieve, what you have achieved and how – anything that you would like to say, then I would like to listen to you and so would the people who are subscribing and tuning in every week!
