Interview with Guy and Helyn, owners of Alpe d'Huez cycle chalet

26 February 10

Guy and Helyn from King of the Mountains, Alpe d'HuezGuy and Helyn initially moved to France from the UK to work in the chalet business catering for skiers in the winter and mountain bikers in the summer months. That experience, coupled with their own sporting backgrounds, has given them a good appreciation and knowledge of the needs of people coming to the Alps to enjoy active holidays.

I met Guy and Helyn 10 years ago. They were keen sportspeople and friends of Lawrence (of the Tri Store) They kindly let a great gang of us descend on them early on London Marathon day to use their very conveniently positioned flat – on the edge of Greenwich Park – as a place to meet, eat and go to the loo before we ran to Westminster! I was struck by their generosity of spirit and willingness to help us all out, and their passion for sport and genuine interest in the sporting pursuits of others.

That they chose to take the courageous leap and set up their own cyling chalet in the French Alps seemed fitting with their passion for the outdoors and their love of cycling and their adventurous spirits.

I so enjoyed the opportunity to interview them for my podcast and I think listening it will be hard not to be tempted over – for Helyn’s cakes for sure! – and the amazing terrain and sporting opportunites, especially to cycle Alp D’huez and compare your time to Lance Armstrong.

Speaking of Lance Armstrong, I just wanted to include a quick plug for his Livestrong campaign, encouraging people to take responsibility for making their own lives better. With this attitude, the same name, sport, and the fact that both Lance and I share experiences with cancer (my mother died of cancer at 50 years old), this is a cause close to my heart! Take a look at their webpage.
